How to Move a Kitchen in 5 Easy Steps
The kitchen is typically the most difficult and time-consuming room to pack in the house. Each appliance and piece of glass tableware is fragile and must be wrapped and transported safely from one occupancy to the next. If you are wondering how to pack a kitchen, you are not alone. Keep reading to discover some quick kitchen packing tips!
- Bubble Wrap and Towels: Packing dishes for moving is a project in itself. Place the largest pot or pan in the bottom of the box and nest smaller pans inside of one another. To prevent scratches, bubble wrap or a towel should separate each pot or pan. When packing pots and pans, nesting is a good way to save on space, as well as stay organized. Make sure pots and pans can’t jostle around in their boxes by placing crumpled up paper, or even smaller items, in any unfilled spaces in the box.
- Start Early: Do not wait until the last minute to start packing. Procrastinating and waiting until your moving date will cause additional stress, as well as a greater chance of items being damaged during the move. A smart way to start packing early, while still staying organized, is to utilize a self storage unit. Self storage units will get items you aren’t currently using of the way and into a safe location. Also, using a storage unit is a smart way to pack early and reduce stress in the long run. For fragile items like musical instruments, wine and artwork, consider using a climate controlled storage unit.
- Clean and Tape All Appliances: When packing appliances, make sure they are cleaned thoroughly. Cleaning out appliances, as well as fully drying them, will go a long way in preventing mold. This is especially important for the items you place in storage. To prevent damage during the move, make sure to tape all appliance doors shut.
- Plan Ahead: When in a rush, it may be tempting to just throw items in a box, without any method to the madness. Put similar items, or items that belong in the same room, in the same box and clearly label the outside of the box with its contents.
- First Day Box: Pack all items you will need on the first day in your new home into a box labeled “first day” box. This box should have items like some simple food, plates and utensils to get you through the first few days at your new house.
