Moving a Washer and Dryer into Storage

It is not often that you will have to move your washer and dryer. Maybe you are moving your appliances because you are transitioning into a new home. Or, you didn’t buy a new home, but decided to upgrade the appliances in your current household. Whatever the reason, use these tips to move your washer and dryer with ease.

How to Move a Washer and Dryer

  1. Cleaning the Washer: The week leading up to moving your washer and dryer, run a rinse through the washer to remove any built-up detergent. If you still have built-up detergent in your washer after running the clear rinse, create a solution of water and vinegar and run it through the washer. Once this has been done, remove all removable parts.
  2. Cleaning the Dryer: To clean the dryer, remove any debris or lint leftover from the last wash. Use a vacuum to suck up any lint you were unable to get using your hands. Once this has been done, remove all removable parts including the lint trap.
  3. Shut Off the Water Valves: When removing the washer and dryer, first shut off the water valves leading to the appliance.
  4. Disconnect the Gas Line: Take extreme caution when removing the appliances from the gas line. If you haven’t done it before, do not attempt to disconnect the gas line yourself. Instead, consult a professional.
  5. Secure the Washer’s Drum: This step is optional but can help to protect the longevity of your washer. Use a shipping bolt to secure the drum on the washer and prevent it from moving around too much which can damage the drum.
  6. Take Care When Moving: To prevent damage from occurring to the washer and dryer during the move use a dolly to move the appliances. Any small dings or scratches can damage the structure or components of the washer and dryer.

How to Store a Washer and Dryer

Are you in a situation where you’re looking for temporary or long-term storage of your washer and dryer? Maybe you have moved out of your old home but your new home will not be ready for a few months. This means you may have to find temporary storage for your items while you live in a hotel or with a friend. Or, maybe your child is planning on moving out next year and will be in the need of a washer and dryer. If you store your old washer and dryer until your child moves out, it will save them a great deal of money in the long run.

Before storing your washer and dryer, it is important to properly prepare them for storage. Try out these tips!

  1. Ensure the Washer and Dryer are Dry: When storing any item, it is extremely important to ensure it is completely dry. Any moisture leftover in the washer or dryer can result in mold or mildew forming while in storage.
  2. Leave the Appliance Doors Cracked: To promote good air flow and prevent moisture from getting trapped inside of your washer and dryer, leave the doors of the appliance open.
  3. Cover the Appliance: To prevent dust from settling on the washer and dryer, cover the appliance with a blanket or sheet. Do not cover the appliance with plastic, as it can trap in moisture.
