Playroom Storage and Organization

Your children’s playroom is a place where they can go on adventures, let their imaginations grow and live in a world of color. That doesn’t mean, however, that the room needs to be in chaos at the end of each day. If you want your playroom to stay organized — even in the whirlwind of activity — follow the playroom organization tips below.

5 Tips for Playroom Organization

  1. Declutter old toys.

As your children age, they outgrow many of their toys. It’s important to take some time occasionally to clear out the old toys and activities that no longer get use. When you do, try to do so when the kids are occupied elsewhere. It may be more difficult to rid the playroom of old items when the little ones see them and create reattachment.

  1. Keep playroom storage within reach of little hands.

If your little ones can easily reach the bins and shelves where their toys belong, they’re more likely to put the items back when they’re done. Consider small bins like cubbies and stackable baskets.

  1. Use color to your benefit.

Using different colors for playroom organization can be incredibly helpful, especially for children who can’t read yet. You can approach organization by color in a couple different ways. You can have one color for each child’s items with another color for shared items, you can have different colors for different types of toys and activities or you can create a combination of the two that works for you.

  1. If you’re using shelving instead of bins, consider using something with doors.

With kids, “easiest” is always best. Shelving creates an easy way for children to put things back where they found them. Unfortunately, because they’re still learning, “easy” doesn’t always mean everything looks its best. To keep everything looking orderly, consider using cabinets or cubbies with doors. This will help hide any disorderliness until the kids are a little older and understand how items should be stored.

  1. Use a bookshelf.

Most children have favorite toys or games that they play with more often than other activities. If that’s the case for your family, a bookshelf creates an easy solution. More frequently used items can go on the lower, more reachable shelves while less often used items can go higher up. This will create more floor space for play time.
